Wren's Gear Corner: Black Diamond Cosmo 350

Posted by CHRISTINE IKSIC on
Headlamps are a necessity in my life and have replaced flashlights in our household. Whether it’s for overnight backpacking trips, car camping, lights going out during a storm, or searching for a dog toy that’s disappeared under the couch, they are so convenient. I also like to keep 1 or 2 headlamps in my car for emergencies. Please, no one ask me how many I own!!

Wren's Gear Corner: GSI's Java Drip Ultralight

Posted by CHRISTINE IKSIC on

A must have for campers and backpackers alike. This lightweight and reusable pour over filter will be your new best friend! Don't sacrifice your good cup of joe in the AM. I used to carry instant coffee and would just gulp it down for the morning caffeine rush but with the Java Drip I'm able to have my enjoyable cup of coffee like I'm back at home with my pour over. The Java Drip is a great gift idea for that person that has it all or to add to your kit to make those mornings in nature even more enjoyable. Cheers to that!

GSI's Infinity Backpacker's Mug

This is a family favorite at 3ROC! This mug weighs in at just 3.5 ounces and is lined to make measurements while making camp meals or just measuring water at work for my noodles a breeze. Sometimes the most simple product can complete your kit!

Wren's Gear Corner: Exped Ultra 3R

Posted by CHRISTINE IKSIC on

The Exped Ultra 3R Sleep Mat is one of the best in the market! Swiss engineering wins with Synmat Technology that will keep the insulation lined and ready for 3 season use for a lifetime. I've been using this pad for almost a year and I love the simplicity of the Schnozzel pump bag that inflates the pad in minutes and doubles as a great waterproof compression sack. Alternatively, you can use the Exped Widget that inflates your pad, works as a lantern, and charges electronics via a USB connection.

The pad feels super durable with 20 D ripstop polyester and I never feel as though I need to be "dainty" with it. I love hitting the trails with the Ultra 3R knowing that I'll be well rested and ready to put in the miles each day. It's also great for car camping and I love that Exped also makes a double size mat, on my wish list!, so that there are no gaps, which I know the pups will love! See yinz out on the trail!

Stop by the shop, say hi, and check out our selection of sleeping pads!

Wren's Gear Corner: Leki Micro Vario COR-TEC

Posted by CHRISTINE IKSIC on

What I liked about it?

After using cheap trekking poles for years I upgraded to Leki Micro Vario COR-TEC trekking poles last fall and haven't looked back. I love how compact and easy to use they are. The cork grips are also great as they don't soak up sweat and are more durable over the long run compared to foam grips. My favorite feature is the z-pole fold design that makes it super easy to pack for air travel at 15 inches.

Updates From The Road To The World Kayaking Championships

Posted by CHRISTINE IKSIC on
Finals are over and I realize that I haven't been dreaming. I will be competing at the World Championship Kayak Races. The past week was spent training and preparing. Lodging, a rental car, and airfare have been booked. My racing coach, Josh Friedman of ATP Race Consulting has put together a crushing workout schedule on the flatwater. If you cross a bridge over the Allegheny or the Mon and happen to see a very sleek looking green kayak, it's probably me.  And, if I'm not paddling fast then I'll be gasping for air. I've also been paddling Slippery Rock Creek in McConnells Mill State Park and the Yough River in Ohiopyle whenever possible and my boat handling in the whitewater is improving!
