Yoga for Backpackers and Hikers

Wednesday, October 11, 5:30-8pm @ 3ROC

Description of Workshop / What to Expect:

First, we’ll learn yoga poses and mobility drills to help ready the body for long days on the trail, including asana to stretch and strengthen the hips, quads, hamstrings, calves, ankles, and feet, and asana to open the chest and relieve tension in the back from carrying a pack. Next, we’ll practice pranayama (breathwork) to help avoid fatigue on the trails and strengthen and stabilize the core. Then, we’ll move through a flow to help improve stability and balance – crucial when hiking with a heavy pack. Class will close with a guided meditation to help you feel renewed from your time in the wild and foster a deeper connection to nature. 

What to wear/bring:

  • hiking shoes
  • dress for the weather - this class will be held outdoors
  • yoga mat and towel
  • water 
  • optional: bring your own pack, either filled with the weight you normally carry on a hike or whatever amount of weight you’d like to use to practice mobility drills

Other info:

  • No prior yoga or hiking/backpacking experience needed

Meet your instructor:

Jessica has been practicing yoga since 2006, first as a way to build strength and improve proprioception, then as recovery from physically demanding work days and outdoor adventures. Eventually, yoga became a daily ritual of resetting mind and body and renewing creativity. She received her 200 hour certification through One Point One Yoga in 2021. Her classes have roots in vinyasa, which simply stated, is linking poses together seamlessly through breath. Jessica teaches rotating Saturdays at 3ROC and weekly classes at ASCEND Climbing Gym. In her free time, Jessica enjoys running, hiking, axe-throwing, karaoke, and craft beer. Follow her on IG @jessicaschaefer.yoga
