Join Joseph Brosky for a celebration of his new book, "Adventures in Penn's Woods" at 3ROC.
"This is the story of Donna and Joe and their retirement adventure to
visit all of Pennsylvania's state parks and forests. Join them as they
explore the diverse beauty of these landscapes, navigating everything
from travel tips to personal revelations along the way. Their journey is
more than just about discovering nature - it’s an exploration of self, relationships, and the joys of connecting with the world around you.
Through their experience, you'll be inspired to create your own
adventure and find your own path to adventure and discovery."

About the Author and his Motivations to Write his Book:
I was born in Pittsburgh and spent my first 36-years there. My Mom was
from the West End and my Dad from McKees Rocks. My wife, Donna
and I were married in 1978 and we have two children and two
grandchildren. Our daughter Laura, her husband, Eric, and our
grandchildren, Mason, and Sophia live on the South Side. We have been
living on Laurel Hill Mountain, located between Ligonier and
Johnstown, since 1988.
I retired from the Bureau of the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
Explosives in 2017. My last assignment was as Team Lead, Field
Intelligence Support Team-Central, in Washington, DC. Also, I earned a
BA, Biology from La Roche University and a MBA, Accounting from
the University of Pittsburgh’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of
Business. I became a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1993 and retired that
designation in 2021.
My leisure activities include biking, cross-country skiing, kayaking,
geocaching, hiking, reading, tent-camping, travel, TRX training,
weightlifting, wildflower identification/photography, and writing. My
favorite leisure time is time spent with family. Donna and I have hiked
many trails together including sections of the South West Coast Path in
Cornwall, Rim to Rim in Grand Canyon National Park, Isle Royale
National Park trails, portions of trails in Mount Rainer National Park,
trails in New Hampshire utilizing Appalachian Mountain Club’s huts in
the White Mountains, the Trans Mount Blanc (TMB) trail in Europe, the
West Highland Way in Scotland, and portions of the Wild Atlantic Way
in Ireland. We also biked from Pittsburgh to D.C. on the Great
Allegheny Passage and C&O Canal. We achieved our goal of visiting
all 124 Pennsylvania State Parks and 20 State Forests on May 21, 2023.
For several years now, I have hosted my Cupa Joe class on the Virtual
Senior Academy which is part of the AgeWell programming of the JCC
which is located in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh. It is an hour-
long gathering during which I usually take Zoom participants on a
virtual hike and afterwards, we have a conversation that goes in many
different directions but is always filled with smiles and laughter. We
have a wonderful core group with others dropping in throughout the
months. My goal with this program is to spread the message that no
matter what physical limitations one is facing in their 60’s and beyond,
there are ways that the treasures found in the outdoors can be
experienced—through physical adaptations or the use of Zoom and
similar technologies. I think this message dovetails nicely with AARP’s
Disrupt Aging campaign and Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh’s goals.
During our state park quest, our grandkids were never far from our
minds and I make reference to them in many pages as we explored the
parks. I believe introducing our children and grandchildren to the
wonders of nature is the greatest gift that we can give to them as parents
and grandparents. Nature is not judgmental nor does it pressure kids to
excel, it just provides many moments of awe, laughter, and joy producing positive memories that last a lifetime. Plus, teaching our children to temporarily live in and safely explore nature is a gift in itself.
